چکیده

precipitation changes in the region on orbital timescales. 22 The Nordeste, a semi-arid region in northeastern Brazil, 23 is known for its severe and recurrent droughts, which cause 24 socioeconomic problems for millions of people. Observational and 25 modelling studies have convincingly linked below-normal rainfall 26 in the Nordeste during the rainy season (February, March and 27 April) to periods of anomalously warm waters in the tropical 28 North Atlantic sector, a weakened interhemispheric sea-surface29 temperature gradient, an unusually far northward position of the 30 intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and El Niño conditions in 31 the tropical Pacific (for example refs 9,10). 32 Abrupt reduction of the Atlantic meridional overturning circu33 lation and sea-ice expansion in the North Atlantic are viewed to be 34 the cause of a southward displacement of the ITCZ (ref. 11), which 35 promoted wet conditions in the Nordeste12 and dry conditions in 36 Venezuela13,14 on millennial timescales. These episodic wet phases 37 extended to the interior of the Nordeste, where they are recorded by 38 short-lived speleothems/travertine growth phases15. 39 The long-term average climatic conditions in the Nordeste are 40 primarily a result of the subtropical anticyclone in the South 41 Atlantic and persistent subsidence related to the Nordeste Low in 42 the upper troposphere. Monsoon systems tend to influence the 43 equatorward portion of subtropical anticyclones to the east of 44

Mid-Holocene climates of the Americas: a dynamical response to changed seasonality

Simulations of the climatic response to midHolocene (6 ka BP) orbital forcing with two coupled ocean–atmosphere models (FOAM and CSM) show enhancement of monsoonal precipitation in parts of the American Southwest, Central America and northernmost South America during Northern Hemisphere summer. The enhanced onshore flow that brings precipitation into Central America is caused by a northward dis...

9. the South American Monsoon System

The main characteristics of the South American monsoon system are reviewed. According to some diagnostics, the wet season in tropical South America begins in early October over the Brazilian highlands and spreads northward. Wet season rain rates are somewhat smaller than those in other continental monsoons. The annual cycle of precipitation is most pronounced in the southern Amazon, where some ...

Summer precipitation determinant factors of Iran's South-East

Indian Ocean is known as a source of moisture for southeast of Iran due to summer precipitation. In this study, in order to investigate the role of SST of Indian Ocean, and the convergence and divergence fields in the precipitation of southeast of Iran, precipitation data of five synoptic stations were used during 2000-2010, including Iranshahr, Khash, ChahBahar, Zabul, and Saravan. To investig...

Spatiotemporal variability of alkalinity in the Mediterranean Sea

The paper provides a basin-scale assessment of the spatiotemporal distribution of alkalinity in the Mediterranean Sea. The assessment is made by integrating the available observations into a 3-D transport–biogeochemical model. The results indicate the presence of complex spatial patterns: a marked west-to-east surface gradient of alkalinity is coupled to secondary negative gradients: (1) from m...

Twentieth century trends in moisture advection over Australia

We have examined some of the characteristics of moisture advection and its relation to precipitation over Australia. Seasonal extremes of moisture advection have changed considerably during the latter part of the 20th century. Analysis of its skewness reveals that the relative occurrence of these events has increased. A kurtosis analysis shows that there has been a geographical shift of where t...
